1/2 c. shortening (part butter or margarine)
1 c. brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1/2 tsp vanilla
Mix above thoroughly.
Stir tog:
1 3/4 all purpose flour
1/2 tsp soda
1/4 tsp salt
Stir into wet ingred.
Divide dough in half and roll or pat out onto wax paper into an 11 x 7 rectangle.
Spread on half of date filling. Roll up tightly beginning at wide side. Pinch edge to seal
Chill the wax paper wrapped roll for several hours.. Cut in 1/4 inch slices and bake at 400 about 10 min til lightly browned
Date Filling:
8 oz pck of chopped dates & 1/3 cup water in saucepan
Cook in saucepan til slightly thickened stirring constantly
Cool slightly and add 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts ( I use walnuts)
My mom always made these..as well as the date filled cookies with the white dough that is folded over.. but these are my favorite... Mama Ruth
